Study Abroad Grant
The Elaa Foundation Study Abroad Grant is a scholarship created to provide an educational, global experience to students in low income communities who otherwise could not afford to travel. We believe that high school is a time for self-exploration and a time to begin exploring the world around you. This grant will give these students the opportunity to explore a new country, learn a different language, and meet new people from around the world. All characteristics important to strengthen college applications, give a sense of awareness and gain independence.
Elaa Foundation is working to merge the disparity among minority students who study abroad. The number of American students studying abroad continues to steadily increase, growing by 2.3% in academic year 2016-17 compared to the previous year, according to new data from the annual Open Doors report released today by the Institute of International Education. However, minority students are underrepresented with only a 29% participation of which only 21% represent the Latino, Black or African American students.
We will be giving one grant a year to a student in an inner-city high school. In order to obtain the grant, students must submit an application by the set deadline. The winner will have to attend a Financial Literacy Workshop and will commit to create a before and after video about the experience. We partner with established and reliable programs here in the USA that have been working with high school students for more than 10 years. Elaa Foundation will provide the funding, while the partners will arrange the travel and itinerary.
